CSS Exercises

Complete three tasks: create two columns above 700 pixels, centre a maximum-width container, and give links visible keyboard focus. Start with the example and change one concern at a time.

How it works

  • Use this page as a starting point for your own work: change the content, make a prediction, then inspect the result.
  • Before considering a solution finished, test keyboard navigation, narrow widths, readable contrast, and longer text.

Practice checkpoints

Create two columns only when there is space.

Use a one-column base, then @media (min-width: 700px) { .layout { grid-template-columns: repeat(2, minmax(0, 1fr)); } }.

Centre a content region without fixing its width on phones.

Use width: 100%, max-width: 70rem, margin-inline: auto, and border-box when padding belongs inside that width.

Give keyboard users a distinct link indicator.

Use a:focus-visible with an outline and offset, and verify the ring is not clipped by an overflow container.

A practical example

The HTML supplies the content; the CSS below styles it. Open both together in the playground, then change the lesson rules at the end of the stylesheet.
