AngularJS Directives

A directive adds a behavior or view instruction to a matched element. Keep its purpose narrow and choose its scope, required controllers and cleanup based on the behavior it owns.

How it works

The emphasis directive adds a class to the original paragraph. It does not replace the paragraph with a different element or take responsibility for the page’s whole model. A component is usually clearer for a reusable view with its own template. A directive remains useful for an integration that needs to decorate or coordinate an existing control.

Run the code

AngularJS 1.8.3 is a legacy framework whose official support ended in January 2022. These examples teach maintenance, not a recommendation for a new application. They need a separate local browser page; Bhylu has no AngularJS playground.

In an empty folder save the HTML below as directives.html and the server as lab-server.mjs. Make a vendor folder and save the four pinned libraries there, retaining their MIT notices. With Node 22 or later run node lab-server.mjs directives.html, then open http://127.0.0.1:8136/. Stop that lab before running a different lesson. The server supplies fixed read-only HTTP fixtures; no data is saved and it does not connect to SQL. No PHP, Apache or MySQL configuration changes are needed.

Focus on the bindings and controller

This excerpt leaves out the document shell, styles and library files. Use the complete download to run it.

<p repair-emphasis data-result>Check loose fasteners</p>
<script>
  (function () {
    "use strict";
    var app = angular.module("repairLab", []);
    app.directive("repairEmphasis", [
      function () {
        return {
          restrict: "A",
          link: function (scope, element) {
            element.addClass("marked");
          },
        };
      },
    ]);
    app.controller("DeskController", [function () {}]);
  })();
</script>

Expected result

Check loose fasteners

The original paragraph receives the marked class and remains semantic text. The browser review checks that class. An input or event-based directive should also document how it reacts to later value changes; a link function running once does not imply every bound attribute is permanently fixed.
