HTML Links
A hyperlink connects a reader to another location. Its destination and visible label should work together so the next action is predictable.
How it works
- Use an a element with href for navigation. Use button for an action that changes the current interface or submits a form.
- Relative URLs are useful for pages in your own project. Fully qualified URLs include the scheme and host, such as https://example.org.
- If a link opens a new tab, consider telling the reader. For target="_blank", explicit rel="noopener" is a useful defensive convention.
A practical example
<nav aria-label="Workshop information">
<a href="schedule.html">Read the workshop schedule</a>
<a href="contact.html">Contact the organisers</a>
</nav>
Each link describes its destination without relying on nearby text. The navigation landmark also identifies the group’s purpose.
