HTML Video
The video element embeds a playable video without an obsolete browser plug-in. A useful implementation includes readable controls, suitable files, and access to the spoken and visual information.
How it works
- Use controls for native playback controls and preload="metadata" when you only want an initial metadata request. preload is a browser hint rather than a strict download guarantee.
- source elements can offer alternatives. The type should match the actual file encoding and container.
- Use track kind="captions" for a caption file such as WebVTT, with an appropriate language and label. Provide a transcript link separately.
A practical example
<video controls width="640" height="360" preload="metadata" poster="media/workshop-poster.jpg">
<source src="media/workshop-tour.mp4" type="video/mp4">
<track kind="captions" src="media/workshop-tour-en.vtt" srclang="en" label="English" default>
<a href="media/workshop-tour.mp4">Download the workshop tour</a>
</video>
<p><a href="tour-transcript.html">Read the tour transcript</a></p>
The example needs the named local files. Captions should include relevant speech and sound information, not merely a rough summary of the topic.
